When my niece turned eight all she wanted was a hermit crab. Of all the aquarium type pets she had chosen this marine crustacean!
I had to do some quick research in order to understand the habitat required to keep a hermit crab. The internet provided just what I needed! I learned that the hermit crab takes residence in the empty shells of other creatures. The hermit crab can live a happy fulfilling life in a glass fish aquarium filled with some gravel, extra shells in different sizes, water and food.
Soon after my niece's birthday our family headed to San Diego. We spent many hours searching for shells to fill the new hermit aquarium. I had discovered through my research that the hermit crab needs to change "homes" as it grows. Extra shells are an essential part of it's aquarium environment.
My niece caught on quickly with the care of her new aquarium pet who became known as "Hermie." She watered and fed her new friend daily. We purchased commercial food from a pet store. Hermie also eats fresh fruits and vegetables. |
