CUTTLEBONE 6-10 INCH
cockatielsWhen I was a kid my late Aunt Jeanette had a couple of cockatiels in her home. I enjoyed looking at Aunt Jeannette’s cockatiels because they were quite pretty. To be quite honest I was also a quite a mischievous little girl and I liked to tease the cockatiels when my aunt was not looking. I used to stick my finger between the bars of their cages and they would try to bite me. I always managed to pull my finger away in time but with hindsight I think I was quite lucky that neither of them ever bit me.
Something else fascinated me about those cockatiels and the contents of their cages. There were these white things inside their cages that to me looked a little bit like tiny surf boards. I have since found out that these white things were actually cuttlebones and the cockatiels were using them to sharpen and condition their beaks. According to what I have read these cuttlebones also provide birds with certain vitamins and minerals that they need. It makes me laugh that I thought the cockatiels had surf boards when I was a little girl. It’s weird the way children’s imaginations work.
